The Secret to Success and Staying Relevant
I've been making a living as a professional Master of Ceremonies and entertainer for the past 30 years. (If you're trying to do the math, I hosted my first contracted event when I was 16.) :)
This past week, a few people asked me, "what's the secret to your success," and "how can I stay relevant in a constantly evolving industry?"
1) There is no secret. In my opinion, "success," at least how I define it, is a culmination of hard work, discipline, tenacity, integrity, gratitude, philanthropy, freedom, and continuing education.
2) You are who you surround yourself with. If you constantly spend your time with people who tell you all of the things that you WANT to hear vs. what you NEED to hear, then there's a good chance that your chosen career might be limited to 15 minutes of fame or worse- a viral video that is forgotten about 3 weeks later.
Seek a circle of influence that lives by the creed, "Complacency is the enemy of progress."
If you want to truly be 'successful' and stay relevant for the long term, (many entrepreneurs are living a good life well beyond their 70's and 80's..... let that sink in for a second) go out of your way to collaborate and connect with the best in your arena. Put as much effort and careful consideration into shaping your real world education as you do your traditional education.
I still have a lot to learn and my personal success story is always a work in progress, but one thing I know for sure is that I wouldn't be here today answering questions about success and longevity if it weren't for my generous friends and mentors.
Onwards and upwards.
